Our Cleanse - The Weekend Report

From: Mallika Chopra | Posted: Sunday, October 12th, 2008

What's a cleanse? Simply put, a cleanse is a short-term regimen designed to detoxify your body - it could be from sugar, caffeine, alcohol, processed foods, meat or something else. Most cleanses are similar to fasting, so you'll likely take in a lot of fluids to flush out toxins from the body. Be sure to consult your health-care provider before beginning a cleanse.

Today marks the end of my seventh day of my second ever cleanse.  Sal has done a great job blogging about the first few days - in fact her first blog outed me to the world! (Read about Sal's last day on the cleanse here.)

My dark secret is that I did not finish my first cleanse - I wavered off after eight days.  So, I am totally committed to completing the full eleven days of this, and today the end is in sight.  Fiver more days!

So, why am I doing this?  Well, believe it or not, I am a caffeine addicted chocoholic! Yes, in the last few months, as we have launched Intent, this wonderful site focused on personal, social and global wellness, I have had 5 teas and 1 cappuccino a day, sometimes a coke, and generally a chocolate chip cookie every day.  Not a role a model of healthy living, eh?

My goal has really been to clean my system.  The first few days were really bad - fighting a cold, as well as caffeine withdrawal (which were both linked), I had body aches, head aches and was exhausted.  On Monday, I actually slept for two hours in the afternoon - something I haven't done since I had my second child 4 years ago!!

It's got easier by the day, and dare I say it, I feel pretty good tonight as I write this.  I confess - I have "cheated" with one tea almost every day.  But, I am a believer in finding the right balance in any situation -- seriously, I was utterly miserable, so the tea, probably my psychological crutch, saved me.

Five more days...  This time, I am determined to complete it. I am feeling good, and know that the coming days will result in great physical and emotional rewards.

Hello Malika
Cleanses have become the heart of my American Yogini Hohm company. To do a cleanse while still maintaining a usual work and family life is truly the most challenging thing. I am really amazed and inspired by how many people are undertaking this practice while continuing to work normally. What you have probably discovered is that things like caffein and sugar is not what you are wanting to "cleanse" but they are pointing mightily at something else. That is why that lovely cup of tea felt so good to you. I think it is very appropriate to "cheat" in these small ways when cleansing while maintaining normal work hours ( for you at this start up must be quite significant--I know as I am also starting up with new products just now) and also to be providing meals and emotional support for your family at the same time. You and Sal and all those who cleanse while staying in life are true "wonder women".
Remember, Malika to infuse your cleansing foods and juices with a constant "intent" dedicated to your cleanse -- even the "cheat" foods
and you will have a fantastic result. Please feel free to call upon me if I can be of service during your cleanse or about cleansing.
Namaste,
Mary

I decided to decaffeinate myself and fast in the 40 days leading up to the election. I found that I was extremely addicted to coffee and tea (much moreso than I had originally thought). I am happy to read that I am not the only one who has "cheated" - I drank a coffee (full strength)in the second week of the cleanse. I am feeling much stronger without the caffeine and more hopeful about the results. Next, lemon tea w/ cayenne pepper cleanse once I am caffeine free to furthur cleanse my system and drop some pounds. Best wishes for your continued success! V.

What cleanse are you doing, Mallika? I've done the Bernard Jensen 7-day cleanse twice in my life, but that is a tricky one to do on a busy schedule (there's a lot ...um ...involved with that one). I'm thinking it may be time again to cleanse, and I assume there are plenty solutions that may not be as thorough as Dr. Jensens, but still quite effective. Thanks! =m=

It's inspirational to see you on the 7th day of an intention. Congratulaons and keep up the good work. I love that you have given yoursef permission to drink a cup of tea each day. It is about balance, love and being kind and gentle with yourself and your body. Sweet! cz***
